Saudi Arabian student Turki Alturki gives his wife Basmah Aljaman some driving lessons in a Sydney neighbourhood. Before coming to Canada, Basmah never drove a car, because it is illegal for women to drive in Saudi Arabia. Basmah admits she was very nervous to drive at first, but says that Turki’s encouragement has helped her to embrace and enjoy being behind the wheel.
Turki is a CBU business student, and like many Saudi students in Canada, is studying under the King Abdullah Foreign Scholarship program. The scholarship is delivered through the Saudi Arabian Cultural Bureau of Canada, which also provides program funding for dependents of scholarship recipients.
Through dependent programming, Basmah attended an English language course at McKenzie College in Sydney. The course caters specifically to Saudi women whose husbands are studying in Cape Breton.
